The Beauty Quotient: Measuring The Impact of Beauty With Neuroaesthetics
Monday October 7, 2024 1:00pm - 2:30pm CDT
In the architecture and design industry, explaining the value of something as subjective and intangible as
aesthetic appeal can be a challenge. When working within the needs of budgets, schedules, and code requirements, justifying the cost of design features that aren't strictly "practical" is difficult. The new field of research known as Neuroaesthetics may offer solutions to justifying "the beauty quotient." Neuroaesthetics examines how artistic and aesthetic experiences measurably impact our brains and bodies. This field applies scientific data and rigor to questions of: "what is beauty?" "why is beauty important?" and "what is the impact of beauty?" In this presentation, we will look at the current state of Neuroaesthetics research, and how these findings can be used to design built environments which
promote well-being.

Susan Pruchnicki, FAIA LEED AP ID+C
Principal, Bond Architects Inc.

Susan’s interest in architecture began when she was a child – at a Career Day event at her school, she
discovered that a friend’s architect father had designed her town’s library. After that moment of personally
experiencing the relevance of architecture, she was fully committed to becoming an architect herself. She
graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a BA (1986) and Masters (1988) in Architecture.
Susan has been active in the AIA at the regional, state, and national levels for decades, serving on multiple
boards and committees. For the past several years, she has been researching what she calls "the beauty
quotient" — how to communicate the value of beauty in the built environment, and how aesthetics benefit
building occupants.

ARTCRUSH
Wednesday October 9, 2024 10:00am - 2:00pm CDT
ARTCRUSH! is an IRL social networking event designed from the structure of speed dating to emphasize 1- 1 interactions. It is an opportunity for us to collapse the distance of online social networks by providing local creatives a chance to connect with each other face-to-face and build a broader community across many genres, backgrounds and cultures.

How does it work?
Upon arrival, participants will be split into two color groups (blue and green) and be seated at stations facing each other. When a bell is rung, one group rotates to the next station while the other group remains seated. Over the course of the event, participants are guaranteed to have 10 conversations, each lasting eight minutes. Within each conversation, both participants will have four minutes of time to share about themselves. This can be a good opportunity to practice one’s 'elevator pitch’ - basically who you are and what you like to do - but stripped down to the essentials. Pamphlets are also provided which include prompts, such as, “What excites you about the art/music/design scene here?” or “Who’s work are you excited about right now?” or “Any shows coming up I should know about?” The pamphlets also contain blank pages to write down names of your new acquaintances, as well as the artist recommendations and information about upcoming shows.

Please enjoy some Mimosa Bar and light nibbles compliments of STL.org and STLDW.

Where can I find more information?
ArtCrushes are scheduled monthly and upcoming events are announced through instagram @artcrush.stl.
You can also contact us through email (artcrush.stl@gmail.com) to inquire about upcoming events.
Don't be a stranger - Hope to see you there!

THIS IS A FREE EVENT WITH LIMITED CAPACITY. THIS EVENT HAS ASSIGNED SEATING AND MATERIALS. PLEASE EMAIL ARTCRUSH.STL@GMAIL.COM IF YOU CAN NO LONGER ATTEND AFTER REGISTERING.

L. Irene Compadre, PLA is  the Founding Principal & Design Director of Arbolope Studio, an award-winning Landscape Architecture, Urban Design and Public Art practice based in St. Louis, MO. An experimental firm that prioritizes high-quality design, ecological resilience, and social-equity; Arbolope’s civic-centered work ranges from intimate public spaces such as Love Bank Park on Cherokee Street, to large-scale masterplans including for the new Jefferson City Botanical Garden in Missouri's capital city.
Current projects include the Expansion of the America's Center Convention Complex, Wildcare Park for the Saint Louis Zoo, as well as the Transformation of the St. Louis Community College Meramec Campus.

Irene holds a MLA from Washington University in St. Louis where she also teaches as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts.

In their own words, "A landscape is both a journey and a destination. It’s where we walk, sit, stand, and kneel. It’s where we’re going and how we’re getting there. Here and there we meet to find common ground.

We believe that public places must amplify the quieter voices and tell new stories. We believe that our streets should do more than connect us and that open spaces can open minds as well as hearts. We believe that landscapes should serve all persons, human and non-human alike – now and in the future.

At Arbolope Studio we strive to create innovative and impactful landscapes that balance high-quality design, social equity, and ecological resilience. Our goal is simple: to create a happier, healthier, and more connected world."

Miranda Murray
Hello! My name is Miranda and I started my Graphic and Web Design Business in January of 2024. After getting my Bachelors in Fine Arts Degree at University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL), I worked full time for an agency and freelanced on the side. Shortly after, I turned my full-time employer into one of my clients so that I could freelance full-time. I now focus on graphic and web design for local STL businesses and started a project called "Sites For Causes" that helps non-profit organizations find free and low cost design and website options. I continue to learn and face new challenges, and while some days are easier than others, I wouldn't trade this lifestyle I created for anything.
