ARTCRUSH
Wednesday October 9, 2024 10:00am - 2:00pm CDT
ARTCRUSH! is an IRL social networking event designed from the structure of speed dating to emphasize 1- 1 interactions. It is an opportunity for us to collapse the distance of online social networks by providing local creatives a chance to connect with each other face-to-face and build a broader community across many genres, backgrounds and cultures.

How does it work?
Upon arrival, participants will be split into two color groups (blue and green) and be seated at stations facing each other. When a bell is rung, one group rotates to the next station while the other group remains seated. Over the course of the event, participants are guaranteed to have 10 conversations, each lasting eight minutes. Within each conversation, both participants will have four minutes of time to share about themselves. This can be a good opportunity to practice one’s 'elevator pitch’ - basically who you are and what you like to do - but stripped down to the essentials. Pamphlets are also provided which include prompts, such as, “What excites you about the art/music/design scene here?” or “Who’s work are you excited about right now?” or “Any shows coming up I should know about?” The pamphlets also contain blank pages to write down names of your new acquaintances, as well as the artist recommendations and information about upcoming shows.

Please enjoy some Mimosa Bar and light nibbles compliments of STL.org and STLDW.

Where can I find more information?
ArtCrushes are scheduled monthly and upcoming events are announced through instagram @artcrush.stl.
You can also contact us through email (artcrush.stl@gmail.com) to inquire about upcoming events.
Don't be a stranger - Hope to see you there!

THIS IS A FREE EVENT WITH LIMITED CAPACITY. THIS EVENT HAS ASSIGNED SEATING AND MATERIALS. PLEASE EMAIL ARTCRUSH.STL@GMAIL.COM IF YOU CAN NO LONGER ATTEND AFTER REGISTERING.

Cherokee Street Walking Tour: Choose Your Flavor
Wednesday October 9, 2024 2:00pm - 3:00pm CDT
Get up close and personal as Jeff and Randy Vines of STL-Style show you why Cherokee Street is the gift that keeps on giving.

It's a known fact that St. Louis is a city oozing with creative soul and grit, and no place proves it more than Cherokee Street. Once known as "downtown of the South Side", Cherokee Street is the quintessential microcosm of St. Louis. Its colorful 1.5 mile stretch transcends political, socioeconomic and cultural boundaries like no other, and its evolution over time has reflected the overall dynamics of the larger city around it. If we took all the different ingredients that make St. Louis an interesting, inspiring and challenging city and put them in a blender, we would end up with a Cherokee Street smoothie. And damn, it's refreshing.

Beginning and ending at the NW corner of Texas & Cherokee.

Designing the Future of Technological Innovation and Social Impact in St. Louis
Thursday October 10, 2024 10:00am - 11:30am CDT
TBA
The world of “Build Fast and Break Things” is over. As we enter this next technological revolution, powered by artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies—where a digital product can instantly reach billions of people—we cannot risk putting broken things into the world. To prioritize impact along with innovation, designers must play a pivotal leadership role. They’re tasked not just with making technology look pretty, but also with embedding critical questions at the onset of innovative developments.

With its new Master of Design (MDes) for HCI and Emerging Technology, WashU is positioning St. Louis as a leadership hub for the next generation of socially innovative digital products and designers. This innovative new program inverts the model of exporting design to other disciplines, instead inviting collaborators to bring their problems to the design school to develop translational solutions that have meaningful impact on the world.

Come listen to the program Chair and Associate Professor Jonathan Hanahan talk about the exciting developments in design-led research anchored in St. Louis. Hanahan will discuss the program, research collaborations, and opportunities to get involved as collaborators, students, faculty, mentors, and more.
Find out how students in this program will become the leaders of this digital transformation.

About the Speaker:
Jonathan Hanahan is a researcher, critical designer, and educator with a complex relationship with technology simultaneously fascinated and apprehensive. His innovative approach involves harnessing technology to scrutinize its own impact. Through speculative exploration, he delves into the tangible, cultural, and societal consequences of digital experiences and technology's role in shaping our daily existence. Hanahan specializes in crafting Thick Interfaces media, experiences, and interfaces that disrupt the familiar digital veneers, revealing the complexity beneath.

Hanahan's current research is centered on alternative and ambient interfaces. In 2022, he established the Sensory and Ambient Interfaces Lab (SAIL), dedicated to envisioning a future less reliant on screens. SAIL explores non-visual interfaces and interactions, fostering a digitally enhanced yet less intrusive future. The lab operates in contexts where screens are impractical, unsafe, or distracting, investigating ambient design strategies that harmonize with human experiences to convey information.

Hanahan earned his BArch from Virginia Tech and his MFA from The Rhode Island School of Design. He is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Master of Design (MDes) for HCI and Emerging Technology program at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. Additionally, Hanahan co-founded and co directs Fox Fridays, an interdisciplinary workshop series promoting experimentation with tools, processes, and technology.
