Dirty Drawings: Charcoal Portrait Drawing Workshop

Whether you're a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, this hands-on workshop will give you an opportunity to explore the expressive potential of charcoal.
Over the course of the workshop, you'll get your hands dirty learning fundamental techniques such as shading, blending, and mark making, all while working with this versatile medium. The instructor will guide you step by step, helping you develop your skills and confidence as you bring a portrait to life on paper. Come prepared to experiment, make bold marks, and truly get your hands dirty! By the end of the session, you'll have created your very own charcoal work to take home. All materials are provided, so just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to explore.

Agenda:
1. Welcome & Introduction
2. Brief introduction to charcoal as a medium
3. Goals for the session and what participants will create
4. Demonstration: Portrait Drawing Techniques (20 minutes) - Live demonstration of charcoal portrait drawing.
Techniques for capturing facial features and expressions. Tips for achieving depth and contrast with charcoal
5. Warm-Up Exercises (15 minutes) - Experimenting with pressure, shading, and smudging techniques. Understanding basic facial proportions
6. Hands-On Drawing (1 hour) - Participants begin developing the portrait. Instructor provides individual guidance and feedback. Applying shading techniques to add depth and dimension. Focusing on key features: eyes, nose, mouth, and hair. Experimenting with blending tools to refine the portrait
7. Group discussion on challenges and discoveries so far Sharing tips and techniques among participants
8. Final Touches & Refinement (20 minutes)
9. Showcase & Feedback (10 minutes)
10. Closing Remarks (5 minutes)
Note: All materials will be provided, and participants are encouraged to take home their completed charcoal portraits.

Ryan Greis is Founder and Head of Instruction and Research at Drawn Studio. Guided by an active interest in late 19th/early 20th Century American Realism art, he has identified and located a number of previously lost works by painters such as Frederick Oakes Sylvester and Frank Duveneck. Ryan is also a specialist in representational drawing and brings his unique intrigue in historic art and illustrative drawing techniques to his teaching studio.

His artwork has appeared on the pages of New York Press, St. Louis Magazine, Riverfront Times and other local and regional publications around the United States, earning him numerous awards year after year from the Association of Alternative Newsmedia. Gries is a Kentucky Governor's School of the Arts alumni. He earned his Bachelor's of Arts degree in Visual Communication from Northern Kentucky University and his MBA from Lindenwood University.
