Designing Women: The Positives and Negatives of Owning an Agency in St. Louis
Monday October 7, 2024 10:00am - 11:30am CDT
Despite women making up nearly 51% of the St. Louis population, the design industry has historically been dominated by men. This trend extends to the ownership of creative agencies, which have remained largely been run by men.
Why is this the case? What challenges do women face in the design industry? Are these obstacles similar to those of the past, or is there hope for a brighter future? And why are women creatives less likely to own agencies in St. Louis, the region, and the nation? To shed light on these questions, we've gathered four successful women who are leading thriving design agencies.

Join Cheree Berry, Deanna Kuhlmann-Leavitt, Gretchen Werremeyer and Katie Schenck, successful leaders in the creative industry as they share their experiences, insights, and strategies for overcoming the challenges they've faced. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from these talented professionals and ask questions
about their journeys.

GRETCHEN WERREMEYER, President/CEO. (Werremeyer)
Just over a decade after graduating from ArtCenter College of Design (Pasadena), Gretchen became the agency’s sole owner. Her experiences as a designer and creative director on clients like St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Logan College of Chiropractic did more than help her clients grow; they shaped her vision for the agency she would create. As she and her team became trusted by more and larger clients like Esse Health, BJC Healthcare and WashU Medicine, in 2018 Gretchen officially shifted the agency’s primary focus to serving health and wellness clients.

The Beauty Quotient: Measuring The Impact of Beauty With Neuroaesthetics
Monday October 7, 2024 1:00pm - 2:30pm CDT
In the architecture and design industry, explaining the value of something as subjective and intangible as
aesthetic appeal can be a challenge. When working within the needs of budgets, schedules, and code requirements, justifying the cost of design features that aren't strictly "practical" is difficult. The new field of research known as Neuroaesthetics may offer solutions to justifying "the beauty quotient." Neuroaesthetics examines how artistic and aesthetic experiences measurably impact our brains and bodies. This field applies scientific data and rigor to questions of: "what is beauty?" "why is beauty important?" and "what is the impact of beauty?" In this presentation, we will look at the current state of Neuroaesthetics research, and how these findings can be used to design built environments which
promote well-being.

Susan Pruchnicki, FAIA LEED AP ID+C
Principal, Bond Architects Inc.

Susan’s interest in architecture began when she was a child – at a Career Day event at her school, she
discovered that a friend’s architect father had designed her town’s library. After that moment of personally
experiencing the relevance of architecture, she was fully committed to becoming an architect herself. She
graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a BA (1986) and Masters (1988) in Architecture.
Susan has been active in the AIA at the regional, state, and national levels for decades, serving on multiple
boards and committees. For the past several years, she has been researching what she calls "the beauty
quotient" — how to communicate the value of beauty in the built environment, and how aesthetics benefit
building occupants.

Delmar Maker District: Growing a Handmade Movement
Tuesday October 8, 2024 3:00pm - 4:30pm CDT
The best ideas often are formed from the simplest concepts.

When Doug Auer and Jim McKelvey were dreaming of the Delmar Maker District, it was quite simply about creating a community of makers. As co-founders of Third Degree Glass in 2002, they already had been successful at engaging the local community with their craft of glass blowing and creating excitement around creation at its core. They
imagined what it would be like to grow that concept to include other makers in the same area, along with revitalizing a fairly unvisited stretch of Delmar Boulevard. The next step? They acted on their ideas. Doug will explain their mindset, their mishaps, and now their obvious success at creating a new arts and culture destination in St. Louis. Stay tuned until the end: The winner of the Third Degree cocktail label design contest will be revealed after the presentation!

Doug Auer began blowing glass in 1996 as a student of Vernon Brejcha at the University of Kansas. A year later, he transferred to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale to pursue his BFA, studying glass blowing and technique under instructors Bill Boysen and Che Rhodes. In the fall of 2001, Doug teamed with Jim McKelvey to co-found and establish Third Degree Glass Factory, with the goal of providing a place to share their passion for glassmaking with the public. Simultaneously, Doug was hired by Washington University to teach both beginning and intermediate glass blowing from the studios at Third Degree. He instructed students until 2004, when he made the transition to focus solely on building Third Degree into a world-class business.

In 2017, he and Jim McKelvey joined forces on a new concept, which was transforming the stretch of Delmar Boulevard from Union to Kingshighway into the Delmar Maker District to support and promote makers of all kinds. With Third Degree Glass serving as the foundation, they opened MADE, a reincarnation of the former TechShop in the Cortex, as the second anchor. Doug has since been the driving force in growing the district and is responsible for bringing MADE for Kids by The Magic House, Craft Alliance, and eight new restaurants to the area.

Though his time is dedicated primarily to the daily operations of Third Degree, he still can be found practicing his original passion in the hot shop. His glass work most easily can be identified by its modernization of the classic teardrop shape.

Discovery & Doodles: Curating a Tremendous STL Experience
Tuesday October 8, 2024 6:00pm - 9:00pm CDT
Tremendousness hosts a creative interactive event in which attendees collaborate to create a shareable visual narrative. This story will highlight some things that each person loves about St. Louis. This could come to life as The Perfect Day in STL, Must-See Places, Hidden Gems, etc. We’ll facilitate small groups and teach everyone some core Visual Thinking techniques, including live sketching, visual frameworks, and strategic visual discovery exercises such as Empathy Maps.

Each group will brainstorm and prioritize ideas, and create sketches to present back to the group. At the end of the session we expect the collective effort to come together to become a “napkin sketch” for a final visual artifact promoting the best of the city we love! (deliverable is TBD but will be something like an infographic poster, map, or a deck of cards). Whatever the output, it will be full of everyone’s favorite things to do in STL, contributed by many different people through a fun, hands-on, creative process. Afterward, we will document the event, package the collective narrative, and make this “Session Capture” and its visual artifact available to (all) STL Design Week attendees.

ARTCRUSH
Wednesday October 9, 2024 10:00am - 2:00pm CDT
ARTCRUSH! is an IRL social networking event designed from the structure of speed dating to emphasize 1- 1 interactions. It is an opportunity for us to collapse the distance of online social networks by providing local creatives a chance to connect with each other face-to-face and build a broader community across many genres, backgrounds and cultures.

How does it work?
Upon arrival, participants will be split into two color groups (blue and green) and be seated at stations facing each other. When a bell is rung, one group rotates to the next station while the other group remains seated. Over the course of the event, participants are guaranteed to have 10 conversations, each lasting eight minutes. Within each conversation, both participants will have four minutes of time to share about themselves. This can be a good opportunity to practice one’s 'elevator pitch’ - basically who you are and what you like to do - but stripped down to the essentials. Pamphlets are also provided which include prompts, such as, “What excites you about the art/music/design scene here?” or “Who’s work are you excited about right now?” or “Any shows coming up I should know about?” The pamphlets also contain blank pages to write down names of your new acquaintances, as well as the artist recommendations and information about upcoming shows.

Please enjoy some Mimosa Bar and light nibbles compliments of STL.org and STLDW.

Where can I find more information?
ArtCrushes are scheduled monthly and upcoming events are announced through instagram @artcrush.stl.
You can also contact us through email (artcrush.stl@gmail.com) to inquire about upcoming events.
Don't be a stranger - Hope to see you there!

Design Is Human
Wednesday October 9, 2024 1:00pm - 2:30pm CDT
Caitlin Metz and Hannah Milks: Design Is Human

A burnt out architectural MFA graduate and wayward design instructor walk into a bar, here’s what they discovered: Bodies aren’t annoying bits of flesh holding back their creative genius, but rather the filter through which all ideas and inspiration spring forth. And they’re on a mission to share the good news of trauma-informed nervous system regulation with the art and design community, where burnout and disembodiment are not unfamiliar states of being.

Come for the hot takes on well-being within the industry, stay for a peek at the duo’s ongoing project Polyvagal Pepperoni. Expect plenty swearing and a somatic primer while Hannah and Caitlin share their stories and experiences. Hannah will dish on what design school taught her about trauma, and what trauma healing taught her about design. Caitlin has the tea on what teaching design taught them about disembodiment, and how their body is leading the way towards a new pedagogy.

In this workshop you will:
- Differentiate your practice from your process
- Understand what activation and deactivation feel like in your body
- Identify what orients you towards a flow state
- Create a personalized guide for what to do next (we won’t send you away empty handed!)

Caitlin Metz (they/them) is an illustrator and freelance designer who has taught at Maryville University for the past eight years. They’ve published two books with Penguin Random House, My Body My Home: a Radical Guide to Resilience and Belonging in 2020, and Feel Something Make Something: a Guide to Collaborating with Your Emotions in 2023. Their self-led study of the mind-body connection is inspired by their personal experience of neuo-divergence and C-PTSD. They believe design can and will shape positive change in the world, and in the inexplicable power of creative expression to regulate, soothe, and heal. They are co-launching a podcast in the fall of 2024 with Rebekah Taussig: Scratch That: parenting off script.
They also run a project called Saturday Morning Carton along with their partner Andrew Gillilan; a weekly delivery of small batch muffins and a hand drawn newspaper filled with poems, musings, and illustrations. But mostly they are known as someone who screams about the sky, makes a lot of zines, and holds strangers' tears with reverence and care.

Hannah Milks (she/her) is a queer somatic practitioner, trauma informed designer, and entrepreneur. She received her MIAPD in Interior Architecture and Product Design from Kansas State University in 2020. Her interest in social justice and the role of design in social change led her to the Somatic Experiencing® training where she spent three years studying nervous system regulation and trauma healing alongside therapists and mental health professionals. Her unique background allowed her to see the overlap between design and trauma healing and she has since been researching and developing methods to support designer’s nervous systems as they move through the creative process.

She is the owner of Clever Babes Co, and uses her training and personal experiences with mental health to create products that help people be more comfortable in their bodies while starting conversations about mental health and de-stigmatizing emotions.

Cherokee Street Walking Tour: Choose Your Flavor
Wednesday October 9, 2024 2:00pm - 3:00pm CDT
Get up close and personal as Jeff and Randy Vines of STL-Style show you why Cherokee Street is the gift that keeps on giving.

It's a known fact that St. Louis is a city oozing with creative soul and grit, and no place proves it more than Cherokee Street. Once known as "downtown of the South Side", Cherokee Street is the quintessential microcosm of St. Louis. Its colorful 1.5 mile stretch transcends political, socioeconomic and cultural boundaries like no other, and its evolution over time has reflected the overall dynamics of the larger city around it. If we took all the different ingredients that make St. Louis an interesting, inspiring and challenging city and put them in a blender, we would end up with a Cherokee Street smoothie. And damn, it's refreshing.

Beginning and ending at the NW corner of Texas & Cherokee.

Campfire: "What does the body know?" with Jessica Gazzola
Wednesday October 9, 2024 8:00pm - 9:00pm CDT
Campfire is a place for reflection and stories on life and how we live it. We teach an interactive and
conversational speaking style to storytellers who share their personal narrative from the stage. And when
the Campfire is over, there’s warmth and wisdom you can bring back to the world.

A quiet and observant child, Jessica Gazzola found solace in nature and books. Through stories, she
learned to explore vast worlds within herself. In the 4th grade, through a school poetry competition, her
mother taught her that it’s not only WHAT we say, but HOW we say it that creates an impact. From that
moment on, Jessica found acceptance and attention through public speaking leading her into public
ministry as a pastor. However, along the way, she lost the wisdom of the child – trading her own inner-
knowing for external validation. Abandoning her public role in 2014, she journeyed to rediscover the magic
of stories and how they communicate the beauty of ordinary life. Now, in her family and her work, everyday
becomes an opportunity to play and create from the heart.

Join us as Jessica shares her answer to the Campfire Season 15 question: What does the body know?
Doors open at 7:30pm, and the event begins at 8:00pm. Please arrive early to park, grab a drink, and hang
out with us before the show. It’s free, so bring a friend and let’s enjoy great stories together!

Designing the Future of Technological Innovation and Social Impact in St. Louis
Thursday October 10, 2024 10:00am - 11:30am CDT
TBA
The world of “Build Fast and Break Things” is over. As we enter this next technological revolution, powered by artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies—where a digital product can instantly reach billions of people—we cannot risk putting broken things into the world. To prioritize impact along with innovation, designers must play a pivotal leadership role. They’re tasked not just with making technology look pretty, but also with embedding critical questions at the onset of innovative developments.

With its new Master of Design (MDes) for HCI and Emerging Technology, WashU is positioning St. Louis as a leadership hub for the next generation of socially innovative digital products and designers. This innovative new program inverts the model of exporting design to other disciplines, instead inviting collaborators to bring their problems to the design school to develop translational solutions that have meaningful impact on the world.

Come listen to the program Chair and Associate Professor Jonathan Hanahan talk about the exciting developments in design-led research anchored in St. Louis. Hanahan will discuss the program, research collaborations, and opportunities to get involved as collaborators, students, faculty, mentors, and more.
Find out how students in this program will become the leaders of this digital transformation.

About the Speaker:
Jonathan Hanahan is a researcher, critical designer, and educator with a complex relationship with technology simultaneously fascinated and apprehensive. His innovative approach involves harnessing technology to scrutinize its own impact. Through speculative exploration, he delves into the tangible, cultural, and societal consequences of digital experiences and technology's role in shaping our daily existence. Hanahan specializes in crafting Thick Interfaces media, experiences, and interfaces that disrupt the familiar digital veneers, revealing the complexity beneath.

Hanahan's current research is centered on alternative and ambient interfaces. In 2022, he established the Sensory and Ambient Interfaces Lab (SAIL), dedicated to envisioning a future less reliant on screens. SAIL explores non-visual interfaces and interactions, fostering a digitally enhanced yet less intrusive future. The lab operates in contexts where screens are impractical, unsafe, or distracting, investigating ambient design strategies that harmonize with human experiences to convey information.

Hanahan earned his BArch from Virginia Tech and his MFA from The Rhode Island School of Design. He is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Master of Design (MDes) for HCI and Emerging Technology program at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. Additionally, Hanahan co-founded and co directs Fox Fridays, an interdisciplinary workshop series promoting experimentation with tools, processes, and technology.

Creativity within Constraints – Making a mark without breaking the rules
Thursday October 10, 2024 3:00pm - 4:30pm CDT
In today’s fast-paced and highly regulated advertising landscape, how do creative professionals balance creative innovation with the strict brand guidelines of large national clients?

This panel discussion brings together industry professionals from New Honor Society and Phoenix Creative—two St. Louis agencies that have extensive experience working with well-established brand standards for nationally and internationally recognized brands. They will share their insights on how to push creative boundaries while adhering to the rules, (and knowing when to break the rules), offering practical advice and real-world examples of how to excel within these constraints.

Recent graduates in graphic design, art, animation, account management, marketing, and writing will gain valuable perspectives on the importance of creativity within the parameters of brand guidelines. This session is designed to inspire and equip the next generation of creative professionals to make their unique mark in the industry while upholding the integrity of the brands they represent.

David Dolak,
Partner, Chief Creative OfficerAs a fine artist and graphic designer, David Dolak welcomes any opportunity to think and create, whether it’s in his studio or with the talented team at Phoenix Creative. As Partner and Chief Creative Officer, he finds nothing more rewarding than helping create singular creative solutions that accomplish his clients’ goals. David has put his talent for advertising and passion for design to work for national accounts including Anheuser-Busch In-Bev, Chick-fil-A, SeaWorld, and Busch Gardens. If you keep an eye out, you might catch David’s work, not just on billboards and print ads, but in local fine-art galleries as well.

Kate Crawford, Associate Creative Director
From a very young age I knew I would be an artist and by the time I was eight years old I decided graphic design would be my career. I wanted to make art that impacted people’s daily lives outside of the traditional way most people view art. The further down this path I went I realized how much larger this concept was then I originally thought. Now, 10 years into my dream job, as an Associate Creative Director I help lead other designers to not only make beautiful and impactful art but how to apply it to design in a way that not only is functional but really looks at the bigger picture. As artists it’s easy to get lost in making of the art itself and often forget how it functions on a deeper level not only for our clients but for our consumers.

Adam Reichmann, VP, Senior Creative Director
With a career in advertising and public relations spanning over twenty years, Adam brings a wealth of experience to crafting impactful branding, content creation, and creative problem-solving. Working with clients from Jack Daniels and Naturalizer to AT&T and Bayer Agricultural Sciences, he possesses a deep understanding of brand building and business strategy. Adam applies this knowledge—along with his own expertise in writing—to direct a talented team of copywriters, art directors, and motion designers as they bring the many facets of ZYN’s incredible story to life.

He will discuss the concept of "artivism"—the blend of art and activism—and how he has harnessed his creativity to address social issues, raise awareness, and inspire others to take action. This event promises to be an insightful exploration of how art can serve as a catalyst for meaningful dialogue and transformation in society.

XD THROWDOWN
Thursday October 10, 2024 6:00pm - 9:00pm CDT
Experience Design Throwdown is something special consisting of two parts design thinking, one part punk rock show. It was born out of an intense love for the type of frenetic collaboration that usually only occurs locked away in innovation labs and agency open spaces. The idea was to set that magic free and celebrate it as a spectator sport.

The idea occurred to us in November 2018 as a way to celebrate what we do as problem solvers in an inclusive way that demystifies fancy research and design methodologies. A way to bring together people who are experts in the community to work along side those who are curious and starting out all for a common cause. The teams get to be rockstars in the pit for the night as they compete head-to-head on the problem space. The spectators get to witness the action unfold while armchair quarterbacking, learning a thing or two and throwing back drinks.

The problem spaces chosen for XD Throwdowns come from local non-profits and the winning team makes a commitment to help bring their idea to life.

TICKETS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS EVENT. PURCHASE HERE:

Irene holds a MLA from Washington University in St. Louis where she also teaches as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts.

In their own words, "A landscape is both a journey and a destination. It’s where we walk, sit, stand, and kneel. It’s where we’re going and how we’re getting there. Here and there we meet to find common ground.

We believe that public places must amplify the quieter voices and tell new stories. We believe that our streets should do more than connect us and that open spaces can open minds as well as hearts. We believe that landscapes should serve all persons, human and non-human alike – now and in the future.

At Arbolope Studio we strive to create innovative and impactful landscapes that balance high-quality design, social equity, and ecological resilience. Our goal is simple: to create a happier, healthier, and more connected world."

Miranda Murray
Hello! My name is Miranda and I started my Graphic and Web Design Business in January of 2024. After getting my Bachelors in Fine Arts Degree at University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL), I worked full time for an agency and freelanced on the side. Shortly after, I turned my full-time employer into one of my clients so that I could freelance full-time. I now focus on graphic and web design for local STL businesses and started a project called "Sites For Causes" that helps non-profit organizations find free and low cost design and website options. I continue to learn and face new challenges, and while some days are easier than others, I wouldn't trade this lifestyle I created for anything.

Dumpster Diving into Design: Creating with Trash
Friday October 11, 2024 1:00pm - 2:30pm CDT
Have you ever been down in the dumps, feeling like garbage, waste-ing time trying to come up with design ideas, only to come up with litter-ally nothing? This workshop will teach you ways to find inspiration in one of the most uninspiring places: your trash bin.
We will start by exploring the relationships between trash and design— what can waste material tell us about the life cycle of a product? How has trash been used by artists around the world to create something new? How can we reimagine trash as something useful or beautiful?

While we discuss these topics, you’ll be encouraged to work with your hands. Discover new ways to play, tinker, and problem solve as you cut, fold, and glue colorful scraps together into a unique creation— maybe a geometric graphic collage, a colorful pair of dice, a functional pull-tab pop-up card— and let the creativity flow. We’re just working with trash after all, so you can set your perfectionism aside and let your imagination take the lead.

All materials and tools will be provided, and you’ll leave with a beautiful art piece! Feel free to reach out to Jess via Instagram (@jamworth) with any questions, comments, or if you want to chat before or after the event!
